Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Corruption remains a significant challenge to governance and public service delivery in Nigeria, particularly at the local government level. In Gusau Local Government Area (LGA), Zamfara State, corruption within public institutions has been a major impediment to the effective delivery of public services, including healthcare, education, and infrastructure development (Adamu & Abubakar, 2023). Corruption undermines the efficient use of public funds, leads to the misallocation of resources, and fosters an environment of mistrust between the government and citizens.
This study aims to appraise the effects of corruption on public service delivery in Gusau LGA. The research will examine how corrupt practices, such as embezzlement, bribery, and mismanagement of funds, affect the quality and accessibility of essential public services. By assessing the impact of corruption on various sectors, this study will contribute to understanding the barriers to effective governance at the local government level and propose solutions for combating corruption in Gusau.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Corruption continues to affect the efficient and transparent delivery of public services in Gusau LGA. Despite the allocation of funds for various public projects, the persistent issue of corruption undermines the effective utilization of these resources, leading to poor service delivery and public dissatisfaction. This study will investigate the extent to which corruption has affected the quality of public services in Gusau and provide recommendations for addressing these challenges.
